Hello my name is Linda .There are times we may need extra help and people go to counselling for a variety of reasons. Periods in your life may have left you feeling upset, confused, sad or afraid . Counselling can be a place for you to gain an understanding of what you are experiencing, make positive changes and to increase your sense of wellbeing.
I have over 9 years' experience of counselling adults, children and young people. I am based 2 miles outside Durham City centre. My core ethos is in the person-centred approach, however depending on your goals and needs, these are the various therapeutic models and techniques I can offer you ….
Person Centred : Person-Centred Counselling is non-directive therapy. I see you as the expert on yourself and working together, we can work on solutions to help you on your journey to recovery. Person-centred counselling allows you to work at your own pace and to talk and be heard.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): The approach of C.B.T is looking at how you can get stuck in patterns of negative thoughts and behaviours, and offers a way of changing these. You will work on a goal or goals to facilitating positive change, often with ‘homework’ (work sheets or activities) to do in between sessions.
Mindfulness: Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to what is happening here and now. When you are being mindful you are aware of your thoughts, feelings, and sensations you are experiencing. Mindfulness can help you change the impact negative thoughts and feelings have on you. It is an effective way to increase calmness, to help ease anxiety and depression.
I have experience of helping people recover from a wide range of distressing problems for example.
Feeling low or depression
Feeling anxious or on edge all the time ( Generalised anxiety disorder)
Loss/bereavement
Relationship issues, family issues and child related issues
Abuse
Low self-esteem.
Panic attacks
Stress
Phobias
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
Addiction to social media
Anger
Working with Children and Young People
My core ethos is in the Person-Centred approach, and I believe that each person experiences are unique. As well as Person Centred Therapy, I can offer Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness and Play Therapy, depending on the child's or young person's needs.
Sometimes children can find it difficult to find the words to tell their story. In the sessions I may use play, games, stories and art/crafts materials to offer them a way to express, understand, explore their issues, in a safe and secure environment.
A Young person may struggle with their feelings or how to communicate them. Counselling can help them talk things through and support the young person, without making them feel judged, in a confidential setting
I can work with children and young people from the ages of 11 years upwards
