The core of my belief as a counsellor is within the creation of the relationship between the therapist and the client. My background is in Bereavement Counselling but I am able to help in many areas of life where problems can arise and I have a profound belief that our past informs our present, and how we manage our lives on a day to day basis. I am particularly interested in supporting those bereaved by suicide, and through miscarriage and still birth.
Through over 20hrs of training with PODS (Positive Outcomes for Dissociate Survivors) I have acquired an in depth understanding of the results of historical trauma, although this does not have to be dissociation. More recently, I have developed a special interest in working with male survivors of domestic abuse. Sadly, it is more common for men to hold back from sharing this experience. Another area of interest and experience is with the elderly, who frequently suffer from loneliness and depression, and feel unable to share how they feel to their relatives in particular.
My work is informed by the therapeutic relationship and I work intuitively and collaboratively. Although the past is always looked at, it can be done so briefly or in more depth, and this means that I can work with you on a short term basis using a 'solution focused' approach, or on a longer term 'person centred' way. To help deal with anxiety, including panic attacks, I can use elements of Mindfulness, which give strategies for coping on a day to day level.
There is much evidence which shows that we can suffer profoundly if our basic emotional needs have not been met in the past, or are not being met now, and therapy can help uncover these, and can help you understand why you feel things profoundly so that you can be compassionate towards yourself in your every day life.
