I qualified as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (Scotacs Diploma in Counselling and Group Work - A Cognitive Behavioural Approach) in June 2012. However counselling has been an integral part of my work in the NHS and University for over 35 years in Northern Ireland, England and Scotland.

During my CBT training and since qualifying I have worked in Edinburgh on a one to one and group basis across the age range; - with Adults, Young People and Children. In 2019 I moved back to Northern Ireland and i am building my CBT counselling practice here.

I have many enjoyable years working with students in higher education, helping them to manage their studies and life and for some in very stressful personal circumstances.
With over 30 year working as a nurse (adult, child) and a midwife, I have clear understanding of the impact of illness on mental health. I am highly aware of the stresses of working in the NHS so I have counselling experience working with those struggling with illness or following injury, their families and health professionals under pressure.

I also have experience nursing in Children’s Intensive care unit Belfast, London and Edinburgh where I also worked as a family bereavement carer. Some of this career and life history resonates with clients and is often the reason they make contact with me.

I adapt my approach, using my knowledge and skills to meet each client’s needs.
During my training we learned how to integrate other counselling approaches within CBT If the approach doesn't seem to be working for the client in a reasonable amount of time, we can explore this and change direction. For this reason it is very important that I evaluate regularly and that clients feel free to tell me if something doesn't feel right for them. Being flexible, and adaptable is part of their recovery journey. Knowing they are safe and will not be judged is essential, and they can be assured of this from the outset.
