My aim is to help you to understand your feelings, explore solutions, and work towards greater stability and peace within yourself. I use a variety of counselling techniques, tailored to your specific needs, which allow you to talk confidentially about your issues, self-perceptions, and hopes for the future.
I can help with issues such as self-confidence, self-esteem, anxiety, depression, low motivation, social anxiety, communication problems, feeling ‘stuck’ in a relationship, drifting apart from a partner, affairs and betrayals, parenting issues, bereavements, disputes over childcare/chores/time together, resentment, feeling lonely/ insecure/ not good enough/ unappreciated/ ’invaded’… Please note, this is not an exhaustive list. More areas are included in the list shown in the 'What I can help with' section at the bottom of my profile. Whatever your issues, please don’t hesitate to contact me to see how I might be able to help you.
I originally trained and worked with Relate (the nationwide, long established, relationship counselling charity), and now continue to work part time for them and with clients in my own private practice. In addition to this I work as a clinical supervisor, ensuring that counsellors and psychotherapists work ethically, safely, reflexively, and legally, encouraging their own self-care to help them maintain their ‘fitness to practice’. I also teach counselling courses to students at levels 1 to 5.
I hold a variety of degree-level and specialised qualifications in the fields of counselling, psychology, and relationship counselling.
The technical bit: My approach is ‘integrative’ which means that I use a number of theories and techniques in my work with clients. My main modalities are psychodynamic, systemic, and person-centred. I also occasionally use theories and techniques from cognitive behavioural therapy, transactional analysis, personality theory, plus various other approaches.
For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in understanding human motivation, needs, and behaviour. Prior to becoming a counsellor/psychotherapist, I had a long and successful career in the field of consumer psychology. I’ve also been a Samaritans listening volunteer, a Dementia Friend, a career mentor, a student mentor, and a specialist mental health mentor. I have a portfolio approach to my career, meaning that as well as the counselling services that I provide, I continue to work as a mental health mentor, and also with couples and families, as a celebrant; designing and leading ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, naming ceremonies and so on.
