Keeping accurate and reflective records is an essential part of maintaining professional standards and supporting your development as a counsellor / psychotherapist, as well as a requirement of being on an Accredited Register. Tracking and demonstrating CPD activities, client work, supervision sessions, and training is important as you may be asked to share with us what you've been doing, if you're chosen for a random audit [link to audit section]. These logs contain all the information we want to know, and they can help you stay organised as well as make plans for future development.
Below, you’ll find links to each log, an explanation of each type of log, and how it can support your practice.
CPD Log Template
Your CPD log is where you record all your continuing professional development activities [link to section about CPD], such as courses, workshops, or independent study (reading, podcasts, documentaries etc). It helps you demonstrate your commitment to learning and meeting professional requirements. It’s also a useful way to reflect on how your knowledge and skills have grown over time and to identify areas for future development.
Client Log Template
A client log is a straightforward way to keep track of your work with clients while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to data protection standards. It allows you to record essential details, such as session dates and any other relevant information and can support your reflections on client progress and the effectiveness of your practice. It also provides a clear record for ethical and professional accountability. It's important that your supervisor has sight of your client log so that they can verify it in the event that you're chosen for a random audit.
Supervision Log Template
Supervision is a vital part of ethical practice, and your supervision log helps you keep track of these sessions. By recording the type of supervision, length of the session, key discussions and any agreed actions, you create a record that shows your commitment to reflective practice and continuous improvement. It’s also a helpful tool for identifying areas you want to explore further in your work.
We recommend getting your supervisor to sign your log after every session, as you'll need a verified log if you're chosen for a random audit. Don't worry if you haven't done this: we can accept separate confirmation of your supervision log if we need to.
Training Log Template
Your training log helps you document courses, workshops, or qualifications that have contributed to your professional development. It’s particularly useful when applying to change your membership category, as it provides evidence of your skills and training. It can also act as a reminder of how your practice has evolved over time. You'll need to send along copies of any certificates to support the log. The section about Total Tutor Contact / Guided Learning Hours is especially important when applying to change your membership category; if you don't have this information to hand, your training provider will be able to let you know.
