This is an exciting time to join the Bereavement Service, following on from the Dorothy House Strategic Plan 2018 – 2025 and its commitment to Supported Bereavement.

Working under the guidance of the Bereavement Service Lead the post holder will have an opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of the bereavement service in accord with the strategic vision to ‘expand the delivery of bereavement care in our community,” For example Friend’s in Grief (FIG), launched in Malmesbury in July 2018, is our first weekly drop in open to all people in the community whose lives have been touched by grief. The intention is to expand this model throughout 2019.

Day to day the post holder will work closely with the Bereavement Service Lead to maintain the operational processes needed to deliver compassionate, creative and effective services to all those seeking support in their bereavement. From taking referrals to arranging initial assessments, it is vital the post holder feels at ease around those who are in grief and has the ability to listen sensitively, providing reassurance when needed but without offering platitudes.

At the heart of the Bereavement Service is our team of skilled Volunteer Bereavement Support Practitioners. Their commitment, dedication and professionalism enabled Dorothy House to deliver over 600 hours of 1 to 1 emotional and therapeutic bereavement support last year. In supporting our team we provide regular individual and group supervision as well as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) days. It’s anticipated the post holder may be required to contribute to this support as necessary.

Depending on qualifications, skills and experience the post holder may be called upon to carry out initial assessments, allocate to volunteers, and hold a small caseload providing 1 to 1 support to bereaved clients at level 2. (NICE Guidelines 2004).

The post holder will be expected to work on their own initiative at times, as well as part of the wider Family Support Team and with other multi-disciplinary teams within the hospice as is necessary.

Job share applications will be considered.
