NCPS | Our statement on the recent religion and racially-motivated…

We're deeply concerned about the recent religion and racially-motivated riots that have been occurring across the country, and appalled by the violence and hatred being displayed. Let us be perfectly clear that we stand resolutely against racism in all its forms.

The surge in demonstrations and racist violence across our country, targeting people based on their ethnicity or identity, is contemptible and has no place in an open and democratic society.

No one should face discrimination, intimidation, or violence because of their religious beliefs or identity.

Our thoughts are with all those affected, including our members, their clients, and the communities we live and work in. These events are profoundly distressing, particularly for those from racialised and marginalised communities who are being unjustly targeted. The trauma inflicted by such events has significant implications for mental health and wellbeing, and we recognise the critical role that counselling and psychotherapy play in these harrowing times.

As an organisation, we're committed to learning and demonstrating anti-racism, and work tirelessly to improve the profession and the lives of our members and their clients from this perspective. We believe in creating a society that is inclusive, safe, and supportive for all. Our commitment isn't just performative; it's rooted in deep, genuine care and ongoing efforts to combat racism and discrimination.

We're heartbroken by what has been happening, and we want to express our sincere support for all those impacted. The role of our members in providing support and fostering resilience is more important than ever. We are here for you, and we will continue to advocate for justice and equality.

Audre Lorde, a poet, writer, philosopher, feminist and activist, spoke powerfully about the importance of self-care as a form of political warfare: “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” This reminder is for our members and clients as they navigate the trauma and challenges that arise from the current events.

In the spirit of these words, we will continue to work towards a world where everyone, regardless of their background, can live without fear and with the full support of their community.
