A recent article in The Telegraph has highlighted the importance of mental health support for new Mums, as many are reporting experiencing issues with their mental health, especially in the early stages of Motherhood.

The article talks about an increase in funding for the NHS "to open "community hubs" for new mothers, offering them advice, referrals to specialists, links in to other care agencies and groups for new parents".
It is hoped that this increase in funding will lead to an increase in support, and subsequently to a reduction in the number of new mothers taking their own lives due to severe post-natal depression.
Other areas in which the "community hubs" could help, although not currently listed as an aim, would be support for expectant mothers, whether a first time mother or not, as well as support for Fathers, some of whom also experience post-natal depression.

Healthcare providers play a huge role in spotting the signs of depression in parents, so it is important that they are aware of the warning signs and comfortable discussing these with parents. The Society has designed an Online CPD course specifically for healthcare professionals to help them build and improve their Counselling Skills, allowing them to better support their patients and improve outcomes.
Parents who are struggling with their mental health and would like someone to talk to in confidence can also search our online Register of counsellors to find either a Counsellor in their area or who offers online Counselling, and who can also help with pregnancy or family related issues.
