On Wednesday the 4th of December the Society hosted a drop-in event in Parliament to highlight the role that counselling and psychotherapy can play to support the significant variation in access to mental health support across the country. We were able to share constituency-specific data on waiting times for talking therapies and the availability of NCPS-accredited counsellors, and gave MPs and peers information about the current challenges and opportunities within mental health support provision.
It was fantastic to see such strong cross-party engagement, with MPs, peers, and their staff stopping by to talk with us. From seasoned advocates for mental health to those newer to the topic, we found all the conversations to be lively, thoughtful, and solution-focused. The event sparked genuine interest, and we’re delighted by how many stakeholders have requested a copy of the data we presented.
The data was a key talking point throughout the event. By showing constituency-level waiting times for NHS talking therapies alongside the number of NCPS-accredited counsellors, we painted a really clear picture of where gaps in provision lie, and where capacity exists to address them. On average, waiting times to see a counsellor on the NCPS Accredited Register are just 1 - 2 weeks (based on data from our annual member survey), demonstrating the potential for private practitioners to complement NHS services and provide timely support for those that need it.
We were thrilled that many attendees saw the value of this data, not just in understanding the challenges but in identifying practical solutions. From asking Parliamentary Questions to sharing the insights with local stakeholders, it’s clear this information has resonated with our attendees.
The drop-in was also an opportunity to meet new allies and strengthen relationships with familiar faces. It was particularly encouraging to see such genuine interest in mental health and counselling from those who haven’t engaged with us before.
Looking ahead, we’ll be following up with everyone who attended, sharing data, insights, and next steps. For those who couldn’t make it, we’ll ensure they have access to the information and resources they need to join the conversation.
Thank you to everyone who attended, and to those members who invited their MPs.
